Notice of Senate Election

Dear Colleagues:

In accordance with Bylaws 115 and 185 of the San Diego Division of the Academic Senate, notice is hereby given that nominations are open for the following positions, with the election commencing on Monday, April 27, 2026:

  • Vice Chair (Chair Designate) of the Division for a two-year term, effective September 1, 2026 through August 31, 2028: the first year as Vice Chair and the second year as Chair of the San Diego Division.
  • Divisional Representatives (two vacancies) to the systemwide Assembly of the Academic Senate for a two-year term, effective September 1, 2026 through August 31, 2028.
  • Member of the Committee on Committees from an Engineering department for a three-year term, effective September 1, 2026 through August 31, 2029.
  • Member of the Committee on Committees from a Health Sciences department, excluding the Department of Medicine and the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science, for a three-year term, effective September 1, 2026 through August 31, 2029.
  • Member of the Committee on Committees from Scripps Institution of Oceanography for a three-year term, effective September 1, 2026 through August 31, 2029.
  • Member of the Committee on Committees from a Social Sciences department for a three-year term, effective September 1, 2026 through August 31, 2029.

If you are interested in nominating yourself or another Senate member, please contact Daniel Carrillo at dcarrillojr@ucsd.edu to obtain a nominating petition. Nominating petitions are due on Friday, January 30 at 4:30 p.m. and may be submitted by e-mail to Daniel at dcarrillojr@ucsd.edu. Please note that the nominee must have been contacted and agreed to serve the term if elected, before the nomination is submitted.

Amendments to the nominating petition process in Bylaw 115 were approved by the Senate’s Representative Assembly in Fall 2025, effective for this election. The following are the updated requirements:

  • Vice Chair (Chair Designate) of the Division: A nominating petition with 25 Senate faculty signatures, representing at least three schools, and a biography from the nominee describing their relevant qualifications and suitability to represent the San Diego Division.
  • Divisional Representative: A nominating petition with five Senate faculty signatures, and a biography from the nominee describing their qualifications and suitability to represent the San Diego Division.
  • Member of the Committee on Committees: A nominating petition with five Senate faculty signatures, and a biography from the nominee describing their qualifications and suitability to represent the San Diego Divisional Academic Senate.

The submitted biographies will be included in the election materials that are posted with the ballot.

The following previously elected Senate members will continue to serve in 2026-27:

  • Divisional Chair 2026-27: Akos Rona-Tas (Sociology)
  • Divisional Representatives: Christina Gremel (Psychology), Randy Hampton (Cell & Developmental Biology), Britta Larsen DeMartini (Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science)
  • Committee on Committees: Luis Alvarez (History), Gloria Chacón (Literature), Seth Cohen (Chemistry & Biochemistry), Teddy Cruz (Visual Arts), John McCartney (Structural Engineering), Sara McMenamin (Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science), Sharon Rose (Linguistics), Farah Sheikh (Medicine), Deborah Yelon (Cell & Developmental Biology)
