Dear Colleagues,
There are indications that a partial government shutdown may occur tonight, Friday, January 30, 2026, at 11:59 pm, if congressional leaders cannot find a compromise on issues that are delaying approval of several key fiscal year (FY) 2026 appropriations bills.
As of January 30, 2026, only six of the 12 FY 2026 appropriations bills have been signed into law. Without passage of the remaining six bills, portions of the federal government will shut down on January 30, 2026, at 11:59 pm. We are monitoring the situation closely and will provide more information to our entire campus community, including research labs and health centers, as it becomes available.
If a short, partial federal government shutdown occurs, UC San Diego expects it to have limited, if any, immediate impact on research, academic or financial aid programs. Our assessment may change depending on how long the partial shutdown lasts.
Educational and research activities should continue as normal, without interruption, and all grant award deadlines should be met throughout a brief, partial shutdown, unless instructed otherwise.
NOTE: Researchers may receive additional instructions directly from federal contracting or program officers. If you receive such information, please notify your contract and grant officer immediately. For questions, email researchadmin@ucsd.edu.
UC San Diego is hopeful that a solution will be found to approve the remaining six bills, several of which provide important investments in UC priorities. Thank you for your continued patience. We will provide additional updates on the situation as more information becomes available.
Sincerely,
