Statement on Shooting at the Islamic Center

We are all shocked and saddened by the senseless shooting yesterday at the Islamic Center of San Diego, which tragically took several lives. The Islamic Center is located in the nearby Clairemont neighborhood and serves as the place of worship for many members of the UC San Diego community and their families. We know that many of our students, faculty and staff are directly affected.

Throughout the day yesterday, our UC San Diego Police Department dispatched officers to the scene, and UC San Diego Health prepared the emergency department for potential patient care for victims. We are thankful for the actions of the first responders who provided aid during this tragic incident.

UC San Diego unequivocally rejects hatred, bigotry, discrimination and violence. We condemn this horrific act, along with all other acts of violence, and we stand with the Muslim community during this difficult time.

To the victims, to those who lost loved ones, and to all those who are affected and grieving, we send our heartfelt condolences. This terrible incident has caused fear and anguish for many, and support resources are available.
