Announcing the Retirement of Dr. Keith Jenné After Nearly 30 Years of Service

It is with a profound sense of gratitude and celebration that we announce the retirement of Dr. Keith Jenné, Executive Director of the Animal Care Program (ACP) and Campus Veterinarian, following nearly 30 years of extraordinary service to UC San Diego.

Dr. Jenné's connection to the University of California system runs deep. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Cell Biology and Biochemistry from UC San Diego in 1989. His first steps in academic research were taken right here on our campus, in the laboratory of Dr. Geoff Rosenfeld, where he discovered a natural affinity for in vivo research that would go on to define a remarkable career.

He later earned his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from UC Davis in 1996 and completed a residency in laboratory animal medicine at UC Berkeley in 2000, before joining UC San Diego in June 2001 as Associate Director of the Animal Care Program.

Over the course of his tenure, Dr. Jenné rose through the ranks with distinction. He has also served a long-standing role as a Health Sciences Associate Clinical Professor (non-salaried).

Jenné later stepped into the role of Interim Director and was ultimately appointed Executive Director and Campus Veterinarian in April 2023. At every stage, his leadership elevated the standard of excellence within ACP and across our research community.

The breadth of Dr. Jenné's impact includes many noteworthy highlights. These are just a few examples:

  • He helped steward research programs that generate more than $300 million in annual funding, a testament to the ACP's critical role in UC San Diego's standing as a top 10 research institution.
  • He generated more than $500,000 in annual external revenue for the university through technical service functions.
  • He spearheaded the development and commissioning of more than 50,000 square feet of in vivo research space, including the landmark centralized research services facility, a first-of-its-kind project funded in part by the National Institutes of Health.

These achievements speak to a leader who leaves behind a formidable legacy. Because of Dr. Jenné's vision, dedication and effort, the Animal Care Program is unquestionably better than it was when he arrived, and the researchers, staff, and scientific communities he served are all the richer for it.

Effective July 1, Dr. Kent Osborn will serve as Interim Director of the Animal Care Program, and Dr. Lauren Krueger will serve as Interim Attending Veterinarian. A formal search for permanent leadership will commence in late July.

On behalf of the entire UC San Diego community, we extend our deepest appreciation for Jenné's nearly 30 years of lasting contributions, superb service, and unwavering commitment to excellence. We wish him all the joy, rest and adventure that retirement has to offer.

Congratulations, Dr. Jenné, and thank you!
