I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Vitaliy Lomakin, Ph.D., as the Director of the Center for Memory and Recording Research (CMRR), one of UC San Diego’s Organized Research Units established in 1983 as a dynamic interdisciplinary program to advance research and postdoctoral training in cutting-edge information storage technology. His appointment is effective July 1, 2026.
Professor Lomakin, in UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been with the university for more than 20 years. His research focuses on developing efficient computational and analytical techniques for multiphysics problems in electromagnetics and micromagnetics, with applications to magnetic, optical, and microwave materials and devices. Lomakin received his Master of Science degree from Kharkiv National University in Ukraine and his doctoral degree from Tel Aviv University in Israel. He completed his postdoctoral training at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Distinguished Professor Eric Fullerton for his service as the Director of CMRR.
Professor Fullerton, also in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, served as Director of CMRR for 15 years, providing strategic leadership and fostering interdisciplinary collaborations among faculty in Engineering and Physical Sciences, as well as with industrial and international partners.
Recognizing the field's evolution beyond magnetic recording, Fullerton led the transition of the center from the Center for Magnetic Recording Research to the Center for Memory and Recording Research, broadening its mission to encompass emerging memory technologies, information storage, and data-centric computing. During his tenure, he expanded corporate partnerships, strengthened shared research facilities and educational programs, and positioned CMRR as an internationally recognized center for research and innovation in memory and information technologies.
Please join me in thanking Professor Fullerton for his dedicated service and welcoming Professor Lomakin as Director.
