Between commencement ceremonies, Pride Month, Juneteenth, and Independence Day, the close of the academic year, and the start to summer, this time reminds us exactly why this work matters and exactly who we are doing it for. I’m grateful we got to celebrate all of it in the same breath at this incredible institution.
I hope you had the chance to do more than observe and actually got to participate and learn the history behind the festivities. Celebrate the people in your life and in our community who have had to fight simply to be themselves. And if you are one of those people: be proud. As Campus Chief Human Resources Officer, I promise to continue doing everything I can to make UC San Diego a place where you never have to leave any part of yourself at the door. Let's honor that by continuing to build a community where the sense of belonging is not aspirational but lived, as stated in our People Proposition.
And as we all take a collective exhale into the summer months, having successfully completed another academic year and all the commencement celebrations that filled our campus with families, caps, and happy tears, remember to soak it all in. This is our reason for the season.
Now, at the expense of sounding like a broken record (you’ll appreciate this song, though), here’s a not-so-gentle reminder: please, please, please rest. Take your vacation. Unplug. The work will be here when you return – and so will we (unless we’re also out on vacation, but you know what I mean!).
Lead with grace and courage,
Terri S. Winbush
Campus Chief Human Resources Officer
