Principles for Responsible Operation of University Locations in Light of the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic (https://regents.universityofcalifornia.edu/aar/mayb.pdf)

The UC San Diego campus is committed to taking proactive steps to limiting the spread of SARS-CoV-2 on campus. On May 22, 2020, the Board of Regents of the University of California stated that “while the elimination of risk is not possible, the University will implement scientifically appropriate COVID-19 practices including, to the extent appropriate, screening, testing, contact tracing and utilize other public health data to inform decisions and mitigate the spread of COVID-19.” After consultation with campus infectious disease experts, the following is the campus policy on COVID-19 testing.

All students entering or physically present on the UC San Diego campus in the 2020 Fall Quarter for educational, research, co-curricular, recreational, or social activities (including all students living in University-owned housing) (herein “Covered Students”) are required to be tested periodically for the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) in a manner and with a frequency as directed by Student Health Services (the “Mandatory Testing Program”). Tests required under the Mandatory Testing Program that are administered by UC San Diego Health will be at no-cost to Covered Students. For clarification, “educational activities” includes attending a class as a student, but not as an instructor.

Upon demand by any University Representative, all Covered Students on campus must immediately produce proof of compliance with the Mandatory Testing Program.

Covered Students who do not demonstrate compliance with the Mandatory Testing Program are prohibited from physically remaining on or coming to the UC San Diego campus or participating in programs or class instruction that take place on campus.

Covered Students who are physically on campus without completing the Mandatory Testing Program or who fail to produce proof of compliance with the Mandatory Testing Program on demand are subject to discipline under the Student Conduct Code. For Covered Students who are living in University housing, violation of this policy may also, among other things, result in relocation to a different housing unit or termination of their housing contract.

In the 2020 Fall Quarter, all UC San Diego staff, academic appointees, and student employees, whether they are reporting to campus or any other physical UC San Diego location for work or working remotely, will be offered voluntary, no-cost testing for the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) at the UC San Diego Health System. Employees working on campus are strongly encouraged to take regular advantage of the UC San Diego testing program.
