REGULATIONS CONCERNING SKATEBOARDS AND SKATING DEVICES

  1. REFERENCES

      The UCSD regulations, Code Section 600.00, Bicycle and Skateboard Enforcement Code, was developed to help reduce the risk of accidents and to ensure a safe environment for the campus. The codes are available from the Campus Police.

  2. POLICY

    1.  The Chancellor, on behalf of The Regents of the University of California, is authorized pursuant to sections 21113(f), 21200, and 39004 of the California Vehicle Code to set forth conditions and regulations pertaining to the operation and parking of vehicles upon the grounds of the University. The term vehicles includes skateboards, and skating devices (including roller skates, in-line skates, foot powered scooters, and other similar devices).

    2.  Skateboarding and skating can be viewed as legitimate modes of individual alternative transportation and recreation, and as such are allowed at UCSD. However, reckless use causes thousands of dollars in damage to University property; generates public safety hazards that places pedestrians at increased personal risk; disrupts faculty, staff, and students working in campus buildings; and creates an untenable insurance/liability exposure for the University.

    3.  UCSD advocates responsible use of skateboards and all types of skate devices.

    4.  Campus affiliates who violate this policy are subject to warnings, citations or fines. Violations by non-affiliated persons may be enforced by citation and/or temporary withdrawal of consent to be on campus.

  3. REGULATIONS

    1. Reckless or Unsafe Skating

      Skateboarding and skating in a reckless, disruptive, or unsafe manner is prohibited at UCSD.

      A reckless, disruptive or unsafe manner is defined as riding at excessive speed and/or performing or practicing stunts; causing noise which disrupts people; riding with undue regard for the safety of others; or riding in a manner that causes damage to UCSD property and landscaping.

      Skateboards and skates must never be ridden up and down steps, stairways, access ramps, retaining walls, seat walls, benches, railings or similar architectural features. In addition, continuous skateboard riding in one location is prohibited. Furthermore, skaters cannot jump or slide on railings whether or not their skates are equipped with rail guards.

    2. Where Regulated

      1. Skateboard riding and skating, even in a responsible manner, is prohibited in any campus area where signs are posted regulating such activity, including areas posted with signs prohibiting bicycles. Supplement I lists Regulations for major campus walkways and complexes.

      2. Skateboard riding and skating is prohibited inside all campus buildings and on building decks (e.g., Mandeville Center).

      3. Skateboard riding and skating is prohibited anywhere other than on paved surfaces.

      4. Skateboard riding and skating is prohibited on all campus roads and parking lots.



Supplement I

REGULATIONS CONCERNING SKATEBOARDS AND SKATE DEVICES
ON CAMPUS WALKWAYS

Regulations for campus walkways for skateboards and all skate devices include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Both skateboard riding and skating is prohibited between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday, except holidays in the following areas:

    1. Ridgewalk between the Revelle Plaza and Peterson Hall

    2. Paths around the old Student Center and Mandeville Center

    3. Grove path south of the Faculty Club

    4. University Extension Complex

  2. Skating is prohibited between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday, except holidays, in the following areas:

    1. Library Walk

    2. Price Center Plaza

  3. Skateboard riding is prohibited at all times in the following areas:

    1. Library Walk

    2. Price Center Plaza

    3. Warren Mall including pathways leading to and from Warren Mall

    4. The section of Ridge Walk from the south edge of the Social Sciences complex to the north edge of the Institute of the Americas complex

    5. Paths, walks, and terraces at SERF building, Pacific Hall, and Sumner Auditorium

  4. Both skateboard riding and skating is prohibited at all times in the following areas:

    1. All campus building interiors

    2. All building decks, including Mandeville Center and Oceanview Terrace

    3. Geisel Library Forum

    4. Concrete walkway south of Cognitive Science buildings

    5. Warren College housing areas

    6. The concrete ramp and concourse north of RIMAC
