II. POLICY
In order to prevent disease, nuisance, and material loss associated with insects, rodents, and other pests, Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) will conduct a comprehensive pest management program to control and advise on problems involving pests on UCSD property. III. PROCEDURES
A. Routine Pest Control
1. In animal handling facilities where wastes, bedding materials, etc., may cause problems with flies, rodents, and other pests, the material shall be removed as frequently as necessary to prevent a breeding or nuisance situation. Feed used for animals shall be adequately protected, properly rotated, and stored away from rodents and other pests.
2. Animal handling and food facilities shall be periodically inspected by Environment, Health and Safety. Any pest infestation in such facilities shall be abated by EH&S in conjunction with the facility manager.
3. The Housing and Dining Hospitality Department shall inform EH&S of any pest related problems in their structures and EH&S shall implement appropriate abatement action.
4. Facilities Management and/or Housing and Dining Hospitality shall be responsible for contracting with either EH&S or a licensed Pest Control Operator for the abatement of termites on UCSD property. Prior clearance for each fumigation or pesticide application shall be obtained from the EH&S Office.
5. The Landscape Services Division shall contract with either EH&S or a licensed Pest Control Operator for the control of outdoor pests beyond building perimeters (weeds, rodents, etc.). This will be done upon the approval of EH&S.
6. The UCSD Medical Center shall provide a qualified/licensed employee to perform pest control services within hospital controlled space in cooperation with EH&S.
B. Special Control
Requests for control of pest infestation or nuisance problems inside any structure will be made known to EH&S and performed by either EH&S or an approved contractor. Any request for control of pests beyond building perimeters will be made known to Facilities Management and performed by EH&S or their licensed operator.
C. Pesticides
1. Pesticides will be used only by EH&S personnel, a licensed Pest Control Operator approved by EH&S, or under conditions specifically approved by EH&S.
2. Prior approval from the EH&S Office shall be obtained for each pesticide used, and monthly usage reports shall be submitted to EH&S showing pesticide used, quantity, date, and location.
IV. RESPONSIBILITY
A. Each administrative unit is responsible for maintaining sanitary conditions in order to reduce potential infestations.
B. The administrative units in charge of each space are responsible for reporting the need for pest control service to EH&S and following all EH&S instructions concerning pesticide applications.
C. EH&S shall be responsible for providing education and information on preventive measures for pest management.
D. The use, storage, and disposal of pesticides and economic poisons shall conform to the requirements of the California Code of Regulations.
