200-20 Workers' Compensation Section 611.8E Employee Workers' Compensation It is the University's policy that employee, student, and visitor exposure to chemical, biological, and physical health hazards be kept as low as practicable. In addition, this policy, current law, and prudent practice requires that employees exposed to some chemical, physical, or biological hazards above a certain specified "action level" will be provided medical monitoring. Medical care will be provided for occupational disease and injury, preventive health measures, and surveillance procedures. Employees injured at other sites, off-campus, or when help is unavailable through normal channels should seek the nearest available medical facilities; if necessary contacting police, fire, or other recognized emergency service. Employees will report all injuries, no matter how minor, to their supervisors. Supervisors must report any work related injury to the Workers' Compensation Office by following procedures listed under PPM 200-20. Cal/OSHA Regulations currently require reporting of serious injuries within 8 hours of knowledge of the injury. Therefore, the immediate reporting of all injuries to the Workers' Compensation office will ensure compliance with this Cal/OSHA regulation. Faculty, students, or staff members engaged in certain activities which might affect their health shall be provided appropriate health monitoring or preventive medical services. Activities falling under this category include: use of carcinogens; exposure to excess noise; use of respirators; exposure to certain chemical vapors, dusts and metal fumes; animal health workers; hospital and clinical employees; and research with certain diseases. Departments, in consultation with EH&S, may require a program of pre-employment and/or periodic medical examinations for occupations or work activities in which general or specific health characteristics are important to safe work performance. Medical examinations, referred by EH&S, are provided by the UCSD Occupational/Environmental Medicine Center (OEMC) and all medical records are kept by OEMC. Ship-operating personnel on University-controlled vessels and persons engaged in any University diving program shall meet all requirements in the medical programs of the administrative units responsible for these activities. Employee access to Employee Exposure and Medical Records (as defined in Section 3204 T8 California Code of Regulations) shall be the responsibility of the employee's department or administrative unit. Any release of general area exposure records maintained by EH&S will be done in consultation with the department and Human Resources--Labor Relations. |
