  2. POLICY

    It is the University's policy that employee, student, and visitor exposure to chemical, biological, and physical health hazards be kept as low as practicable. In addition, this policy, current law, and prudent practice requires that employees exposed to some chemical, physical, or biological hazards above a certain specified "action level" will be provided medical monitoring. Medical care will be provided for occupational disease and injury, preventive health measures, and surveillance procedures.

  3. PROCEDURES

    1. Emergency Treatment of Work-Incurred Injuries

      1. Main Campus: EMERGENCY SERVICE IS AVAILABLE BY PHONING CAMPUS POLICE EXT. 911.

      2. UCSD Medical Center: EMERGENCY SERVICE IS AVAILABLE THROUGH THE HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOM. Consult HU 611-8 Series for details. Dial 6111.

      3. Employees injured at other sites, off-campus, or when help is unavailable through normal channels should seek the nearest available medical facilities; if necessary contacting police, fire, or other recognized emergency service.

    2. Reporting

      Employees will report all injuries, no matter how minor, to their supervisors. Supervisors must report any work related injury to the Workers' Compensation Office by following procedures listed under PPM 200-20. Cal/OSHA Regulations currently require reporting of serious injuries within 8 hours of knowledge of the injury. Therefore, the immediate reporting of all injuries to the Workers' Compensation office will ensure compliance with this Cal/OSHA regulation.

    3. Preventive Medicine

      Faculty, students, or staff members engaged in certain activities which might affect their health shall be provided appropriate health monitoring or preventive medical services. Activities falling under this category include: use of carcinogens; exposure to excess noise; use of respirators; exposure to certain chemical vapors, dusts and metal fumes; animal health workers; hospital and clinical employees; and research with certain diseases.

    4. Medical Examinations

      1. Departments, in consultation with EH&S, may require a program of pre-employment and/or periodic medical examinations for occupations or work activities in which general or specific health characteristics are important to safe work performance. Medical examinations, referred by EH&S, are provided by the UCSD Occupational/Environmental Medicine Center (OEMC) and all medical records are kept by OEMC.

      2. Ship-operating personnel on University-controlled vessels and persons engaged in any University diving program shall meet all requirements in the medical programs of the administrative units responsible for these activities.

    5. Employee Medical Records

      Employee access to Employee Exposure and Medical Records (as defined in Section 3204 T8 California Code of Regulations) shall be the responsibility of the employee's department or administrative unit. Any release of general area exposure records maintained by EH&S will be done in consultation with the department and Human Resources--Labor Relations.

  4. RESPONSIBILITY

    1.  It is the responsibility of each individual and each supervisor to know the procedure for obtaining first aid treatment.

    2.  It is the responsibility of each administrative unit to report to EH&S any work activity which might require preventive medical treatment or medical examination procedures.

    3.  It is the responsibility of each administrative unit to clear proposals for special preventive programs for employees through EH&S.

    4.  It is the responsibility of each administrative unit to prepare a written program addressing procedures for assuring minimal exposure, regular medical monitoring, regular training on procedures, and the specific hazards of the job.
