As we continue to plan for a safe and gradual return to full campus operations this fall, we request that all campus departments that use and operate service vehicles review the new Campus Policy on the Use of Service Vehicles.
This revised campus policy contains several changes for service vehicle operators worth noting:
- Service vehicles are required to use campus roadways and should not transition to pedestrian pathways unless it is necessary to conduct their official university business.
- Travelling via pedestrian pathways for the sole purpose of reducing transit time is not permitted except in the case of an emergency.
- All service vehicles shall maintain a minimum distance of 10 feet behind any vehicle, pedestrian or person operating a micromobility device.
- Service vehicles, including Neighborhood Electric Vehicles/Low Speed Vehicles, must follow the California Vehicle Code and should not be operated or parked in bicycle/micromobility lanes.
Campus safety and security personnel will periodically monitor pathways to remind those operating carts on campus of this policy for a short period of time, after which departments will be notified of infractions. Repeated violations could result in loss of the vehicle to the department.
Thank you for taking the time to review this policy with your staff, and for helping us promote campus safety.
