A Note From Your Campus CHRO, Terri Winbush
| |
With so much going on around the world and the winter season fast approaching, I want to take a moment to remind you of the importance of slowing down and exercising grace toward yourself and others. I can tell you firsthand that it’s easy to fall prey to all sorts of mishaps when we’re in a tizzy, that we forget to live in the present moment, and in the process, forget to be kind. When you are in that frenetic state, things usually don’t go well and you end up stressing yourself out (and sometimes others) unnecessarily and/or even more. Slow down, take deep breaths, be kind, and remember that we can only get to the finish line safely and compassionately by being mindful and in the moment. I know this is easier said than done, especially when going through events of the magnitude that we are experiencing as a humanity. I want you to know that I hear you and understand you, and urge you to look into the resources available to you as a UC San Diego staff member to help with grieving and all the wide spectrum of emotions you may be experiencing. If you can, take a moment to reach out and tell someone you love them today. It may just remind you of how much you are loved.
Before you move on to the resources below, I want to highlight a few events, including our first-ever People Leader Summit, which took place last month. Thank you to those who attended and for making it a great success. Read more about it in this newsletter, including dates for future sessions.
For those who celebrate, with Thanksgiving around the corner, let’s take a moment to reflect on the things we are grateful for. In the words of author Zig Ziglar, “The more you are grateful for what you have, the more you will have to be grateful for.” I am grateful for you all and for the opportunity to serve as the Chief Human Resources Officer for such an amazing and talented group of people.

Inaugural HR Forum Our first HR Forum was held earlier this week with excellent attendance! We were excited to get started with this important network, and to share the direction we are all going toward together, as well as some just-in-time information and updates. While the entire universe of all we do together can’t be captured in one 90-minute session, we are thrilled about all to come. Stay tuned for the event follow-up with resources and a link to the recording, and head over to the upcoming events section to learn when the next forum is taking place.
Curtailment/Winter Closure Reminder As announced last month, UC San Diego (excluding the hospitals and clinics) will officially close for seven (7) days between Monday, December 25, 2023, and Tuesday, January 2, 2024. Many reached out concerned because the dates established by UC San Diego are different from the dates listed by UCPath. I assured you in last month’s Updates from HR that the dates in the campus notice are correct, and they remain correct and will remain that way. If you have payroll-related questions surrounding curtailment, you can see dates on our Payroll page.
Abusive Conduct Policy and Required Training As you may have seen in an October campus notice, the Office of the President has instituted a system-wide Abusive Conduct in the Workplace policy, accompanied by required training for all employees, including staff, academics, and UC San Diego health employees. You received a notification from the UC Learning Center when the course was assigned to you last month. If you haven’t already taken the training, remember you have 100 days to complete it after receiving the notification. Don’t wait until the last minute. To review the policy and for additional resources, visit the Abusive Conduct in the Workplace training information site on Blink.

Professional Development and Learning Opportunities
OSI Launches Introductory AI Essentials Course The Office of Operational Strategic Initiatives at UC San Diego launched a new, asynchronous module that delves into the fascinating world of Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the introductory level. I know many of us (including myself initially) are or were hesitant to explore this new-ish and unknown world of AI. It’s normal to feel this way, but then try to push through and explore how AI can augment the work you do or even help you outside of work. So take this opportunity to jump all over this course - and just remember, do not share any personally identifiable information or private health information with AI platforms. Sign up through UC Learning Center, and reach out to osi@ucsd.edu with questions.
