Updates from Human Resources | |
Welcome to Women’s Herstory Month! During the first few days of March especially, I reflect on my intersectional identity with Black History Month ending and Women’s Herstory month beginning. Remember, these months and others are celebrated to acknowledge what has previously been overlooked, ignored, or not acknowledged appropriately related to the substantial impacts of diverse individuals on our history. Please take a moment to reflect during this month to attend one or more of the events that celebrate this important history.
I have one ask of you all over the next few weeks: take a moment to ask instead of assume. Oftentimes we make judgments about decisions, about people, about situations without asking questions and this can lead to or perpetuate unnecessary negativity. In large part, we are all doing the best we can to do our best work, to make this place welcoming to all, and to build strong and lasting relationships with our colleagues. Stay curious and remember that the work we do together at this great place is only one dimension of who we all are. Now for the substance!

Let’s Talk About UCPath: Last week, I shared the efforts we are undertaking to work with UCPath to address the many frustrations that you all are experiencing. Please read the message and utilize the escalation resources if you need them.
Women’s Herstory Month: The UC San Diego Women’s Center website features exciting information on how you can engage in and celebrate Women’s Herstory Month. The theme this year is "Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories". We hope that you can join in celebrating achievements of women in our communities.
Apply for the UC Women’s Initiative for Professional Development: The UC Women’s Initiative (UC WI) is a professional development program designed to help woman-identified professionals advance in their UC careers. Participants represent faculty, academic personnel and staff, people managers and non-people managers. The program is committed to enabling the full participation, success, and advancement of woman-identified professionals at the University, and all who support this mission are invited to apply. The application period for campus employees closes on Friday, March 24, 2023 at 12 p.m. Learn more about the UC Women’s Initiative for Professional Development.

Supervising at UC San Diego: All supervisors of campus staff at UC San Diego, regardless of tenure or experience in management, are invited to participate in the Supervising at UC San Diego (S@UCSD) training program. This orientation provides an overview of the most important do’s and don'ts of supervising at UC San Diego, emphasizing an approach where supervisors/managers are grounded in best practices, recognize areas that may implicate laws and regulations, and connect with resources to help navigate supervisory challenges. This focus on supervisory responsibilities is designed to complement the Supervisory Training Laboratory’s (“Sup Lab”) exploration of managerial skills.
The program includes two virtual sessions from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 9 and Thursday, March 16, 2023, facilitated by Human Resources. Both sessions are required to receive credit and there is no fee to register. This training will be offered four times per year. Register for Supervising at UC San Diego on the UC Learning Center.
Triton Treats: Join the Staff Association on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 from 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm for Triton Treats: Pie or Pi? Either way, come celebrate Pi Day on the Sun God Lawn.
Call for Volunteers - Triton Days 2023: Triton Days offer an opportunity for the campus community to welcome newly admitted first-year and transfer students to the Triton family and showcase UC San Diego. For many admitted students and their families, Triton Days will be their first chance to experience UC San Diego’s dynamic campus community, expansive research, and collaborative opportunities.
- Saturday, April 8, 2023 – First-Year Admits
- Saturday, May 6, 2023 – Transfer Admits
Triton Days 2023 will be in a hybrid format, with multiple days of virtual activities culminating with in-person, celebratory experiences. Help us welcome newly admitted students by joining the UC San Diego Volunteer Program for these half-day events!
We’re looking at a sizable volunteer effort this year and would be grateful if you are able to lend some help for the success of these events! Volunteer duties include wayfinding, event setup/breakdown, information booth support, supply running, and general assistance. All volunteers will receive a Volunteer Triton Day shirt (with a new design this year), and complimentary meal ticket. If you are interested, please complete this form to sign up for one or more shifts.
Policy Changes
Background Checks: UC Policy requires background checks for new hires and transfers into all critical positions. Critical positions tend to have access to or work with cars, cash, children, keys, and computers, among other things. Locally we use LiveScan for criminal background checks for all in-state applicants, including student positions.
News and Resources
DID YOU KNOW - FSAP Resources available: Did you know that our Faculty and Staff Assistance Program has tools and programs offered on a variety of topics? From classes and workshops on Providing Pivotal Workplace Feedback to Conscious Parenting and Support Groups like the Tritons Flourish Group and BIPOC Support Group if you are looking for support, FSAP can likely provide it! I am a strong encourager and supporter of taking care of your mental health and seeking a counselor before the crisis, if you can, so that you have tools you need when or if the crisis happens to you or a loved one.
Take care of yourselves and each other.
