A Note From Your Campus CHRO, Terri Winbush
| |
It’s almost officially fall, everyone, on the seasonal and academic calendars. For many of you, you are gearing up to make this another amazing year for our students and in support of everything that makes this place great for our students. Others of you are planning to tackle new projects or programs, and some of you are just trying to make it through each day. In full transparency, I’m in that last category, trying to recover from being sick. I share that because I want you all to know, we are all human, even those of us who are normally bursting with joy to take on new ways to make this workplace amazing, and the People Proposition part of your life. I got a shocking reminder that I must take time for my wellness, otherwise my body will force me to take time off for my illness! It’s more than ok to take care of yourself, to get rest, take your vitamins, see your doctor, take time for your mental health, and continue to take precautions around COVID, because it is still out there.
People Leaders, lead by example. Take care of yourself, and encourage others to do the same. Schedule your vacations, remember you work to live and not vice versa. Check in with your teams and colleagues on how they are really doing. Show them grace, because they are whole people, not just or even mostly work machines.
Everyone with a People Leader, yes you, check in on them. They have the responsibility of their day-to-day jobs and being mindful about how all things in the workplace and life affect you as a whole person. If you are feeling tired and/or burnt out, they may be able to multiply those feelings by 10. Show them some grace.
As we are kicking off Hispanic Heritage month, take some time to fully embrace and celebrate the hispanic culture, learn the history, and attend an awesome event as building and sharing in community and belonging is good for the soul! You can click here to learn more about Hispanic Heritage month, which takes place Sept. 15 - Oct. 15.

Last Call, almost, for Staff@Work Survey To everyone who has participated in the survey so far, thank you for taking the time to do so. For those who have not, perhaps you are skeptical that we’re not listening, or you simply haven’t made the time to fill it out. I want to reassure you that your participation is anonymous, and that we take your feedback seriously. We are paying attention to your voice, to your thoughts and opinions, and we are making a concerted effort to make UC San Diego a place where you can show up and love what you do and who you do it with. But we need your participation, so please fill out the survey through the link in your inbox. If you can’t find your email, search for Subject:"INVITATION - Staff@Work Survey ** DO NOT DELETE **” and it will be an email you received on August 16, 2023. It should take you fewer than 10 minutes. This is so important to us, we will be extending the deadline to September 29 so you can intentionally set time aside and let us know what you need to continue toward making the People Proposition your lived employee experience. You can also view the People Proposition in Spanish.
